Product Description APOCALYPTO: BLU-RAY
Forget any off-screen impressions you may have of Mel Gibson, and experience Apocalypto as the mad, bloody runaway train that it is. The story is set in the pre-Columbian Maya population: one village is brutally overrun, its residents either slaughtered or abducted, by a ruling tribe that needs slaves and human sacrifices. We focus on the capable warrior Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), although Gibson skillfully sketches a whole population of characters--many of whom don't survive the early reels. Most of the film is set in the dense jungle, but the middle section, in a grand Mayan city, is a dazzling triumph of design, costuming, and sheer decadent terror. The movie itself is a triumph of brutality, as Gibson lets loose his well-established fascination with bodily mortification in a litany of assaults including impalement, evisceration, snakebite, and bee stings. It's a dark, disgusted vision, but Gibson doesn't forget to apply some very canny moviemaking instincts to the violence--including the creation of a tremendous pair of villains (strikingly played by Raoul Trujillo and Rodolfo Palacias). The film is in a Maya dialect, subtitled in English, and shot on digital video (which occasionally betrays itself in some blurry quick pans). Amidst all the mayhem, nothing in the film is more devastating than a final wordless exchange of looks between captured villager Blunted (Jonathan Brewer) and his wife's mother (Maria Isabel Diaz), a superb change in tone from their early relationship. Yes, this is an obsessive, crazed movie, but Gibson knows what he's doing. --Robert Horton

This is a terrible movie. September 6, 2010 gary97209 (Portland,OR) I'm sorry I bought this film. Seems Gibson is fixated on oral sex and portrays the Mayan's as a bunch of rowdy soccer fan types.
Extraordinary, exciting, awe-inspiring. August 26, 2010 Miles D. Moore (Alexandria, VA USA) "Apocalypto," not "Braveheart," was the film for which Mel Gibson should have won an Oscar. Whatever you may think of Gibson as a man, he shows himself in "Apocalypto" to be an extraordinarily daring, extraordinarily gifted writer-director.
"Apocalypto" is as grand, expansive and panoramic as anything Cecil B. DeMille ever attempted, meticulously recreating the Mayan culture and civilization of the 16th century at the exact moment before the Spaniards arrived. But in its narrative sweep, intensity, realism, and sense of tragedy, "Apocalypto" leaves DeMille in the dust. There is nothing stilted about "Apocalypto;" you feel you are really there, living the anguish of Jaguar Paw (Rudy Youngblood), a jungle hunter and warrior, as he tries to flee from a cruel Mayan death squad and reunite with his pregnant wife and small son.
This being a Mel Gibson film, be warned that the level of violence in "Apocalypto" is very high, and Jaguar Paw comes in for a LOT of punishment. Nevertheless, once you have seen "Apocalypto," you will never forget it. It deserves to be ranked among the classic cinematic epics.
pretty good! August 21, 2010 Bess (North Dakota) Arrived quickly...the disc skips in the first scene and freezes up but that could be an error from the manufacturer because the DVD arrived wrapped in plastic.
Apocalypse Then August 19, 2010 Tymelapse (Deer Park, NY United States) I had previously rented this and liked it enough to buy it once it came out on Blu-Ray. True, it's not for every taste but to my knowledge its historically accurate. Well, pretty much. It looked real, it sounded real and I felt immersed in Mayan history. What cruelty there is is done for "religious" purposes (except for one sociopath who just seems to get a kick out of it..there's one in every crowd.)I like escape/survival situations especially when they are realistic and Apocalypto certainly delivered. So, in my opinion you should give it a try but be warned...heads will roll.
Turn it up, put the lights off and sit back. August 1, 2010 mr r mitchell (Chepstow, Monmouthshire United Kingdom) Apocalypto is an intensely exciting film, full of surprises and dashing-through-the-jungle-chased-by-terrifying-people thrills. The frightening thing is (was) that the ancient Mayans were a civilized people with advanced architecture and social structures - but they also had a religion which demanded human sacrifice. It's all in here, and packaged in a genuinely heartrate-increasing style. Well done, Mel!
